Sweeping a chimney that sits unused for months

Many chimneys around a lake work on a different rhythm from a house lived in all year. They go cold for long stretches, then burn hard on weekends. That pattern matters. A cold flue takes longer to warm up, and smoke that meets cold flue walls leaves more creosote behind.

An idle chimney is also an open invitation. Birds, squirrels and raccoons look for sheltered openings, and nesting material can block a flue completely. So the first job on a seasonal property is finding out what is in the chimney. Then we brush the flue, clear the smoke shelf, and check that the damper still opens and closes.

  • Blockage check before the first fire of the season
  • Stove pipe and connector taken apart and cleaned where needed
  • Factory-built fireplace flues swept with brushes that suit metal
  • Cap and screen checked, since a missing cap lets animals in
  • Photos of anything that needs repair, so you can decide from home

Wood stoves and inserts

A stove burns slower and cooler than an open fire, and it is often turned down overnight. That is the recipe for heavy creosote. A stove or insert that heats the house needs its flue swept every year. Tell us when you book if there is an insert, because it may need to be pulled out to reach the liner behind it.

Opening up for the season? Have the flue checked before the first fire. A blocked chimney pushes smoke and carbon monoxide back into the house.

About the village

Chimneys in Greenwood Lake, NY

Greenwood Lake is a village of about 3,000 people in the southern part of the Town of Warwick. It sits at the north end of a seven-mile lake that crosses into New Jersey. The area grew as a resort after a dam enlarged the lake in 1837, and the village was incorporated in 1924. You can find local notices and building department details through the Village of Greenwood Lake.

That history shows in the housing. Summer cottages built for warm weather stand beside newer year-round homes, and a good number of the older cottages have since been winterised. A heating appliance added later does not always match the chimney it was connected to. A stove vented into an old masonry fireplace flue without a properly sized liner is a common example.

Water is the other factor. Homes near a lake live in damper air, and the village sits around 630 feet up among wooded hills. Shaded, damp masonry dries slowly. Metal chimney parts such as caps, chase covers and dampers rust faster when they stay wet, and a rusted chase cover is a frequent source of leaks on factory-built fireplaces.

Questions from Greenwood Lake owners

I am only at the house on weekends. Can you work around that?

Yes. We are open seven days a week from 6am to 9pm, so a weekend visit is a normal booking.

Do you sweep factory-built fireplaces?

Yes. These have metal flues inside a framed chase. They need the right brush, and the chase cover on top should be checked for rust while we are there.

How do I know if something is nesting in the chimney?

Scratching or chirping sounds, twigs in the firebox and a smoky first fire are the usual signs. Do not try to burn a nest out. Call and we will remove it and check the cap.

Does a rarely used fireplace still need a yearly visit?

It needs a yearly look. Little use means little creosote, but it does nothing to stop water damage, rust or animals.
