What a chimney sweep visit covers
A sweep removes the soot and creosote that wood fires leave on the flue walls. Creosote is flammable, and a thick layer of it is the fuel for a chimney fire. Clearing it also restores the draft, so smoke goes up the flue and not into the room.
Before any brush goes up the flue, we seal the fireplace opening and run a HEPA vacuum so the soot stays out of the house. Then the flue is brushed from top to bottom, and the smoke shelf, damper and firebox are cleaned out. When the flue is clean we look it over, because a clean liner is the only kind you can judge properly.
- Flue brushed to the right size for the liner
- Smoke chamber, smoke shelf and damper cleared
- Firebox cleaned and checked for cracked brick or mortar
- Cap, crown and flashing looked at from the roof when access allows
- A plain account of what we found, with photos when something needs attention
How often to sweep
The National Fire Protection Association recommends having a chimney inspected once a year and swept when it needs it. A wood stove that runs all winter usually needs sweeping every year. A fireplace used a few times a season may go longer, but it still needs the yearly look.
Book before the cold arrives. Late summer and early fall are the easiest times to get on the schedule. Once the first cold week hits, everyone calls at once.
About the village
Chimneys in Florida, NY
Florida is a small village of roughly 2,900 people, set where Routes 17A and 94 meet. Most of it sits in the Town of Warwick, with a small northern part in the Town of Goshen. The community was settled in the 1700s, long before it became an incorporated village in 1946, and the onion fields of the Black Dirt Region start just outside it. The Village of Florida publishes its own local information, including the building department contact for work that needs a permit.
A place that old has a mix of housing. Older houses near the village centre often have masonry chimneys built for a different fuel than the one in use today. A flue that once served a coal or oil appliance may now vent a wood stove or a newer furnace, and the liner is not always the right size for it. That is worth checking during a sweep.
The weather here is hard on masonry too. Winters in this part of Orange County bring repeated freezing and thawing. Water that soaks into a crown or a mortar joint expands when it freezes, and small cracks get larger each season. On the open farmland around the village, a chimney also takes more wind and driving rain than one sheltered by neighbours and trees.

Chimney sweep questions from Florida homeowners
Do you charge extra to come to Florida?
Florida is inside our normal service area, so it is a regular trip for us. We confirm the price before we schedule anything.
My house has an old chimney nobody has used in years. Can it be swept and used again?
It should be inspected first. An unused flue can have a failed liner, a nest, or loose masonry that a brush will not fix. A camera inspection is $69 and tells you what the chimney needs before you light anything.
Will sweeping make a mess in the house?
It should not. The fireplace opening is sealed and a HEPA vacuum runs the whole time, so the soot goes into the vacuum.
Do you sweep wood stove and pellet stove flues?
Yes. Stove pipes and the liners they connect to collect creosote faster than an open fireplace, so they usually need sweeping every year.
